The "CLARE McWHINNIE MEMORIAL BRANCH LIBRARY" was erected in January 1967 to the memory of Clarence Ian McWhinnie

The Clare McWhinnie Memorial Branch Library forms part of the Jamaica Library Service. It was built in 1967 by family, friends and members of the local community.
The Library has become the centre of many community activities and includes lectures, film shows, debates and various programmes for the children.

The Library has books which cover a wide range of subjects including Religion, Social Science, Language, Home Economics, Sports, Biographies, History, Geography and Fiction but to name a few. There is also a special collection of Reference books available for consultation within the Library. These include Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Atlases and even local material books about the West Indies or by West Indian Authors.

The Library [Classed as a "Full Time" Library] is situated in the Race Course Square (Clarendon, Jamaica W.I) and next door to the Post Office.

  Clarence Ian McWhinnie
1911-1963
Planter and Industrialist
of Vere, Clarendon

Clarence McWhinnie was born in Chapleton on August 21 , 1911. He was educated at Munroe College, Jamaica, and later at Brighton College, and London University, England. In 1949, he married Dorothy Bishop and there was one son by the marriage.
Mr. McWhinnie was founder and Managing Director of Waterwell and Engineering Construction Limited, and he was instrumental in developing the underground water resources of the Clarendon Plains.
He was deeply interested in agricultural development, in the establishment of local industries and in education. He was Managing Director of the Caribbean Industrial Equipment Limited, Paradise Farms Limited, a Director of Jamaica Cordage Company Limited, Vere Cane Farmers' Association and Chairman of the Clarendon Farm Development Board. He also served in an advisory capacity on many committees, including the H.R.H. Duke of Edinburgh Study Conference at Oxford, in 1956.
He was a keen sportsman and a great lover of music.
